An ink doodle that was done while watching Friends repeats on TV the other day. It kind of reminds me of the texture on a starfish. On a side note, I've posted 25 images so far this month. That's even more than last month. I feel productive :-)

02.26.04 Thursday @8:50 PM EST

A tribal style elephant design, done with pen and ink.

02.25.04 Wednesday @1:17 PM EST

This is an oil painting I handed in a few weeks ago. It's based on an old black and white photo of my great aunt that was taken in 1933. I wanted it to look reminiscent of poster styles from that era, which is why it doesn't have a huge amount of detail and uses fairly flat colors. The actual size of this is 23" by 26". Check back in the archives for this month if you want to see an in progress photo of it.

Like last weekend, I decided to go back and work on a project that I've had sitting around for a while. I had posted the rough version of this pirate drawing in December, and until today that was how it had remained. He was going to be sitting in a darkly lit pub before, but now he's going to be outside sitting on a barrel by the docks. Obviously, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on it, but at least it's looking more on its way than it did this morning.

02.19.04 Thursday @10:16 PM EST

Just a tribal-like lizard design, done with pen and ink.

02.18.04 Wednesday @10:24 PM EST

Just some minor coloring progress on yesterday's drawing. I'm planning for the hair to be dark red tones, but I only had time to get a base color in. Also, I've updated my portfolio.

I decided that the guy with the floppy hair needed a girl to go with him, so I sketched her tonight. Like the floppy hair guy, she's based on an almalgamation of faces. I didn't bother to shade her hair with the pencil, since I'm going to be coloring it all in Photoshop with my tablet. I'm also posting some progress that I made in the coloring of the floppy haired guy.

And to answer a question I received about Wacom tablets - it is a pressure sensitive tablet that allows you to draw directly in a digital coloring program, such as Photoshop or Painter, using a stylus pen. It's quite fun, and gives you much more freedom with line/brush quality than using only a mouse. And since you have more freedom, it also allows you to work more quickly. Tablets come in a variety of sizes. My tablet happens to be an Intuos 2 Wacom Tablet, size 9"x12" (which means the drawing surface is 9"x12", the actual tablet is larger than that). Here's a page from the company's site, but if you're interested in getting a tablet I suggest shopping around first, because you can usually get a better deal than the typical listing price.

A doodle of a rocker girl. Pen and colored pencils. Yup.

02.15.04 Sunday @8:51 PM EST

Today I was trying to finish up some half completed projects that I had stashed away on my hard drive, but I didn't get too far. This is the only one that I finished to a point that I like. I had originally done more with this, but then I decided I liked the simplicity that it had before, so I wound up undoing most of my changes.

02.12.04 Thursday @8:50 PM EST

Some doodles from class today, while I was waiting for paint to dry. The first is based on a photo I took a few summers ago. The second is loosely based on a picture of a stone lion. It started out alright, but the eyes are totally weird. A good idea gone bad. Oh well.

02.11.04 Wednesday @11:25 PM EST

The fish was done with watercolors and a tiny bit of colored pencil. The guy was doodled during boring TV commercials.

02.10.04 Tuesday @9:42 PM EST

Another watercolor doodle. Yup.

02.04.04 Wednesday @11:14 PM EST

For my watercolor class we were told to mess around with colors and masking fluid on just some small sheets of paper, like 5" x 7". We weren't supposed to do anything representational, just work in abstract mode.

02.02.04 Monday @9:47 PM EST

Just some more random doodles - mountains in Alaska, a tropical flower design, and Trigun sketches. I recently borrowed Trigun from one of my friends. I'm a little over halfway through it, and so far I think it's a fun series. Also, all of the drawings from January have now been archived.

02.01.04 Sunday @7:30 PM EST

This is an oil painting that's due on Tuesday. I'm not really happy with it, but I'm going back to the studio tomorrow for a while to try and get it looking semi-decent for the critique on Tuesday. It's based on a photo from 1933 of my great aunt and I'm trying to make it look sort of like a vintage poster style. It still has a long way to go before I'll be even close to happy with it.
