That little sketchbook of mine is getting a lot of use this summer. It'll probably be filled up soon. Anyhow, the first drawing is just a quick crayon sketch of a wave, inspired by Hokusai.
Next up we have a hippie-ish flower girl. A kid at camp had a t-shirt with a 70's print, so that was my inspiration there.
And lastly, we have Captain Jack Sparrow. My apologies that it doesn't bare much resemblence to Johnny Depp, but I was working from a picture that was about an inch square in a magazine from the collage box at work. I mostly just wanted to draw his crazy pirate hair. Arrr.

More doodles from work. These were just done with a pen in my little sketchbook I've been carrying around with me. The first is just some of the kids working around the table in the art shack, the second is just some random sailor. And speaking of seafaring blokes, Jeff has requested that I draw some pirate pictures. Having quite a liking for pirates myself, you can expect some pictures of the wildest crew that ever sailed the Spanish Main to be popping up here soon. Avast ye swabbies!!

The other day at work we had a guest artist/teacher who brought in inks and watercolors, bamboo brushes, and rice paper. It was nice because it gave me a break from planning projects for the day. The kids painted pictures and also learned how to make different Chinese and Japanese characters. And since I didn't have to really teach anything it gave me a chance to play with the ink and brushes as well. So here are some of the results of that. I also moved a bunch of the drawings that were on this page into the archive since things were getting kind of full on the front page.

Had some fun just playing with my colored pencils while I was sitting outside yesterday, so here are some of the results. This is my brother Dan playing his guitar.
One of the violets that was in my mom's flower pot.
And some blue lady.

Another doodle from work. I was testing out the new crayons we got, so I figured what better way to try out a bunch of the colors than with a sunset? The sunsets around here are always so beautiful.

My apologies for the site being absent on the web as of late. The hosting company I was using was bought out by another company so I've been moving everything over to a new server. This would have all been done sooner except that I was having computer woes and the net connection here is a horridly slow dial-up modem. Hopefully this will be the last of my web troubles for a long time. Anyhow, now on to some sketches.
Just a quick pen sketch I did in the car. It's supposed to be Mrs. Coulter and her freaky monkey daemon from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Good books, I highly recommend them.
This is just some random can can dancer type person. I just like to make up faces and stuff when I'm bored.
My job this summer is at a community center (basically a day camp) where I do arts and crafts projects with kids ages 6-12. Our base of operations is affectionately called the "Art Shack". When it gets slow I tend to grab some of the markers and crayons that are sitting around and just doodle. The kids like to watch and make requests. Here's one of those quickly done sketches. It's at a weird angle because it was in the corner of the paper.

It's the mermaid picture again, just with some in-progress coloring. It still has a lo-o-ong way to go before it's finished. And all drawings from May have now been archived. Just click over there on the right if you want to see them.

Just finished inking this today, so it's going to be my next big coloring project. I've been missing the ocean a lot lately, so I felt like drawing a mermaid. I was trying for not quite the typical Disney version of mermaids you see so often, hence the more elaborate fins, side fins, and webbed fingers. And the scales on her body were inspired by Samantha Morton's costume in U2's video for their song "Electrical Storm".

For some reason we always get tons of junkmail at my house. However, all of those catalogues make for fun pictures to look at. A recent one had all of these Irish clothes in it and I couldn't resist sketching from some of the pics. Yay Irish :-) And I finished that self-portrait. It's posted at my portfolio and at my Epilogue.net gallery, where you can leave comments on it (or any of my other pieces that have been posted there).
