Sketch Blog

While I was at the painting studio today I snapped some photos of two works in progress that I have going on. The first is an 24"x18" watercolor for a still life assignment. The second is for an oil painting assignment, but I can't remember the dimensions off the top of my head. The third image is a drawing I just finished coloring today - you may remember the pencil sketch of it that I'd made during spring break which is posted in the archives for this month. I've posted a close up of it as well, since it's a fairly wide drawing and I'm limited on the width size that I can post here. Also, there's a new layout up at my portfolio.

Some doodles from my anthropology notes. I can't help it, that class can get boring from time to time.

This is a series of three oil paintings that I turned in a few weeks ago in my painting studio class. I wanted to mess around with color and mood while working from only one original photo source, which is a photo that I took at Rosedown Plantation in Louisiana. The second painting is what most closely resembles the photo. The blue one (which is my favorite of the group) was supposed to be more of a moonlit setting and the darker orange one was supposed to have kind of a spookier Tim Burton-esque Sleep Hollow feel. They are each 16" x 13".

I tried taking some photos of these today so that I can finally post them in my portfolio, but I'm having some difficulty. I was trying a new kind of gesso surface on these canvases. This type of gesso has a tendency to crack easily, which I have no problem with aesthetically speaking because it gives the paintings a cool weathered look. From a techinal viewpoint though, it does cause the surface to be ever so slightly faceted, especially closest to the crack points. Throw in a glossy surface and you're bound to get some sort of light reflection, even when not using a flash. So far natural sunlight seems to bring out the color best in the photos, and without proper lighting the colors just don't photograph correctly. Oh well. I'll have to mess around with it a bit more until I get photos that don't have a reflected surface (like these do on their left hand side).

A retro styled face that was inspired by a mannequin that I saw. Composed entirely in Photoshop with my tablet. I also updated my portfolio.

We had a movie night in my building tonight. The movie that we had all planned on watching was Pirates of the Caribbean, but there were technical difficulties with the DVD player. Luckily, the VCR worked and we wound up watching The Little Mermaid. Talk about a major age regression in terms of movie entertainment. It was all great fun though. And I had my sketchbook with me, so I thought it only fitting that I draw a mermaid while we were watching the movie.

This was a painting that I handed in a few weeks ago in my watercolor class. I just hadn't gotten a chance to scan it until now cause my teacher had been holding on to it so he could take a slide of it. It's a small painting, about 4 1/4" x 6". I was experimenting a bit with this one, so I first did all of the orange and yellow wash. Then, when it was dry, I ran it through my printer to get the image on top, which is from a black and white photo that I took this past summer. It's a fun technique and is something that I will definitely be playing around with more.

Oh, and Happy St. Patrick's Day! ;-)

Spring break gave me some free time (finally!!!), so I did a decent amount of drawing in my sketchbook. Here's a sampling of some of those pictures. Also, all drawings from February have now been archived.

A watercolor and ink doodle of a fish that I did earlier today in class. It's not based on a real fish, it's just something I made up. Also, there won't be any updates for about a week and a half since I'll be on spring break.

This is an in-progress scene from and interactive flash storybook I'm working on for a school project. It's going to be a behind the scenes spoof of Cinderella. And obviously, the pumpkin carriage isn't finished yet. Sorry, it's kind of small, but hey, there it is.
